“The Human Conversation” (on Bias, Technology & Social Media)



According to 2020 surveys by Gallup and Pew Research Centre, fewer than 40% of people trust news media for balanced and accurate news coverage. The percentage of those who trust social media is below 20%.


Yet, social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, WeChat and Weibo have become the primary source of news updates for a majority of people world over.


As users, we are routinely exposed to clickbait, partisan reporting, pseudo-science, fake news and conspiracy theories. Even more troubling, misinformation spreads quickly and widely.


Technology and social media platforms are unavoidable. At the same time, they influence the way we think and amplify the impact of our decisions and we are vulnerable to manipulation.
